The Tongariro Region is world famous for its diverse range of ecosystems and spectacular landscapes which include the active volcanoes within the Tongariro National Park including Mt Ngauruhoe – also known as ‘Mt Doom’ from the Lord of the Rings films. There are a variety of trekking and walking opportunities such as the Tongariro Northern Circuit a comfortable 3 day round trip of the mountains. The park is one of only 24 global locations to be given UNESCO World Heritage Site dual status – as it is recognized for both its outstanding natural and cultural value.
