TONGARIRO TROUT FISHING
Fly, Boat & Spin Fishing
The Tongariro trout fishing region is one of the world’s premiere wild rainbow trout fisheries and Riverstone Lodge & Backpackers is located in Turangi, 5 minutes walk from the legendary Tongariro River. Although rightly famous for its winter runs of spawning trout from the Lake Taupo fishery, the Tongariro Region also offers world-class backcountry river and still water fly fishing for trophy trout. There are many other rivers and streams within a few minutes to a few hours drive of Turangi, some of which originate in the Tongariro National Park.
Fly Fishing is the predominant method allowed for under the fishing regulations so if you are looking to make the most of your time, a fly fishing guide may be a good option. If you are less experienced at casting a fly rod the easier option may be to hire a spinning rod and reel, or as a group to hire a guide and boat for ‘jigging’ and ‘harling’ on a daylight cruise.
- You will need to buy a DOC Taupo fishing licence and to check the regulations as some waters are closed in the winter
- Some backcountry rivers may be outside the Taupo fishery and require a Fish & Game national fishing licence
- You can hire gear from a local sports shop such as Creel Tackle & Cafe
- Be sure to check out other sections of this site for gear & methods, locations & access, fishing reports and weather and water conditions
